RECOGNIZING BERMUDIANS IN SPORT AND EDUCATION
Sport Bermuda Magazine was originally launched from humble beginnings in September 1994, when founder Mark “Burger” Jennings teamed up with late entrepreneur Robin Gilbert, who opened up the retail clothing store “Pirate’s Port” in the Bermudiana Arcade. The first issue of “Sport Bermuda Magazine” was headlined by former Dandy Town football star Carlos Smith.
Mr Jennings would then enjoy a very successful and enjoyable career as a head coach at youth level between 1994 and 2006, primarily within the South East of the United States. He won six total state championships with Westminster School in Augusta, Georgia, while assistant coach of both the boy’s and girl’s teams. During this time, Sport Bermuda took an extended hiatus from production. It would resume covering the latest and best success stories of Bermuda sport in 2012, with one of its most notable stories featuring former local boxing sensation Teresa Perozzi; however, it was only used as a hobby thanks to the vision and other physical impediments hampering Mr Jennings.
In the middle of the challenging coronavirus pandemic, Mr Jennings chose to make Sport Bermuda Magazine a full-time venture, recruiting junior sports enthusiast Jared Rego, whom he had followed during his radio show “Sports Zone”, in conjunction with local outlet Inter-Island Communications through station Magic 102.7 FM; Mr Jennings acknowledges Jared as proficient in the lingo of local and international major sports. Other members of his team include graphic designer Sheena Cholmondeley, who was recommended by Dr. Radell Tankard, veteran journalist Patrick Bean, and good friend and university soccer teammate Quilton Eugene Joell. Mr Jennings also had several guest columnists in the early launch of Sport Bermuda Magazine, notably David Bascome, Anthony Mouchette, Lorenzo Tucker, Shaun Goater, and others too numerous to mention.
PURPOSE
Sport Bermuda Magazine is proud to bring future stories about the positive endeavours of Bermudians in sport and education across all corners of the globe. Our purpose is to highlight Bermudians using these sport and education to foster a successful life and contribute to their local community.
Regular features include the youth sports spotlight, which monitors young Bermudians that are doing positive things both here and abroad in education and sport. We also highlight a Bermudian sports hero, who was a prominent figure in his/her sport between the 1970s and 1990s. Some of our sports heroes highlighted include legendary Cup Match cricketer John Tucker, and football star Fred “Pinks” Lewis. We also give back to the community via the sports quiz, with the first three people to get all answers correct winning special prizes from several generous community partners. To enhance the traction of our online launch, we are also offering prizes for those who successfully predict the winners of the upcoming 2022 football World Cup, with a feature on the tournament in the next edition of Sport Bermuda Magazine.
As we move into a brand-new digital era, which is due to officially launch with the October/November issue at the end of this month, we have some fresh specials for the reading public to enjoy. The first issue will include a Bermuda football preview and an update from the local tennis scene, just to name a few. Also, in the spirit of major sporting events, our junior writer Jared Rego will make his predictions for the Group Stage of the 2022 football World Cup, which begins toward the end of November. Each month, our website will be replenished with the latest success stories from our local athletes around the world, as well as community involvement through the sports quiz and other interactive features.
Please join us in celebrating Bermudian legends in numerous different sports, and honoring those who have made the Bermuda sporting landscape stronger and more appealing over the years, at the third annual Sport Bermuda Magazine Awards on November 27th.
Special thanks to current guest contributors such as tennis pro Gavin Manders, football star Leilanni Nesbeth and North Village community club president Shervin Dill among others.
We welcome everyone to enjoy the new and interactive Sport Bermuda Magazine!!
