Welcome to another exciting edition of Sport Bermuda Magazine, which features an exclusive interview with new Bermuda Olympic Association president Peter Dunne, who speaks about the steps they are taking to enhance our Olympic programme. We will feature interviews with three of Bermuda’s triathletes who paved the way for such standout athletes as Flora Duffy and Neil de Ste Croix Jr, who have made significant contributions to the sport of triathlon in the early 1970s, making it an organized and popular sport in Bermuda.

Jared Rego spoke with North Village Community Club president Shervin Dill regarding the importance of football and education working together, as well as his continued leadership role within the Charles and Lesley Marshall Foundation, which was built to grow the structure and popularity of football in Bermuda.

We will introduce a new section on tennis, with Bermuda standout and former #1 Mr Gavin Manders, who interviewed the current number 1 Tariq Simons, on the progress of his career and the progression of tennis on the Island.

Highlighted in this issue of “Sport Bermuda Magazine” will be a Bermudian sports legend: former Somerset Cup Match captain John Tucker, who lifted the annual Classic in 1982. He also was equally talented in football, playing for North Village, Southampton Rangers and the Bermuda national team, before going on to coach Southampton Rangers.

As time goes by, we will have great sportsmen that come and go within our lifetime. Sport Bermuda Magazine has done two tributes to great sporting figures who have passed on in recent months: Anthony “Porky” Manders and legendary broadcaster Mike Sharpe. We will have fitting tributes from former teammates and family members of these two Bermudian sporting legends and community figures.

Then we will feature a young player profile, from the sport of netball. Over the years, there have been great parents that have supported their children and their sporting endeavours. One that past on recently was Marlene “Rosemarie” Manders, the mother of the late Anthony “Eugene”, as well as Andre and Arnold Manders. All three of her sons played in the Annual Cup Match Classic. She was laid to rest at St John’s Cemetery in Pembroke.

We, at “Sport Bermuda Magazine”, send apologies to Wolves Sports Club, specifically former president Vincent Minors II, Dasher Douglas, and Kevin Trott, who are all instrumental in the Wolves organization. I, editor Mark Jennings, firstly apologize to the club and the above gentlemen, for this mishap, particularly after having a successful tenure as the Wolves coach several years ago.

We look forward to bringing you major sporting events and feature stories of athletes who have made significant contributions to the local community on and off the field.

Sportingly yours,

Mark A Jennings

Editor, Sport Bermuda Magazine
