FOREWORD
Welcome to the July/August issue of Sport Bermuda Magazine! We will bring you some of the participants that will compete in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in late July such as Tyler Butterfield, who will compete on the Bermuda triathlon team with Olympic gold medallist Flora Duffy and young rising athletes Erica Hawley and Tyler Smith. Also competing will be track and field stars Tiara DeRosa (shot put), Jahnai Perinchief (triple jump), middle-distance runner Sakari Famous (800 metres), sprinter Caitlyn Bobb, and long-distance runner Dage Minors (1500 and 3000 metres). Making a splash in Birmingham will be siblings Emma and Jack Harvey along with Madelyn Moore. Cyclists Caitlyn Conyers, Kaden Hopkins, Nicholas Narraway and Conor White, along with squash star Emma Keane, round out the contingent traveling to the UK.
Also, Sport Bermuda will give the historic accounts of one of the oldest cricket competitions on the Island, the Eastern Counties Cup, which began in 1904. We will also preview the 50-over portion of the local cricket league season, including a special interview with veteran batsman Terryn Fray, giving our predictions for the Premier and First Divisions in the one-day format.
The 78th annual Edward Cross Long Distance Comet Sailing Race saw skipper Ben Smith win his first career race as captain on the Great Sound, with veteran Dale Brangman finishing second, and record-holder Stevie Dickinson rounding out the podium. Thirteen boats competed in his race on Heroe’s Day, Monday June 20th. This event was sponsored by Polaris Holdings and Stevedoring Services.
We take a look at young people that are doing well overseas in their educational endeavours, and this month’s spotlight is Mr Aidan Peets, the son of Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports, the Honorable Ernest J Peets Jr. Also, the Bermudian sports hero for this month is Ellen-Kate Horton, who won the Gold Medal in the 1978 CAC Games with Bermuda softball team “Big Blue Machine” and was a veteran on the Somerset Bluebirds softball team. She was a pioneer of the Bermuda public education system as a teacher and administrator. She is the sister of legendary sports figure K Randolph Horton.
We have tributes of two football stars that have left us far too soon, North Village and Wolves stalwart Jason Lee and St George’s and Bermuda goalkeeper Freddy Hall. Finally, test your knowledge at our local sports quiz.
Also, make sure you purchase this magazine, just in case we surprise you with another feature.
